This requires speciallaboratory equipment and chemical reagents. One of the effective and affordable methods of diagnosis is a black light lamp or Wood's lamp.

It got its name in honor of an American scientist-physicist who studied optical filters that transmit only ultraviolet rays. The device, depending on the modification, emits waves with a length of 300 to 400 nm using mercury lamps. Due to the presence of the lens, the area under investigation is enlarged, which increases the efficiency of diagnostics. With its help, they determine the parameters of the skin condition and the presence of various pathogenic microorganisms on its surface, reveal mycoses and dermatoses. The products of microbial activity glow brightly when exposed to ultraviolet rays invisible to the eye.

Diagnostics is performed on clean skin. To protect the eyes, it is necessary to exclude direct exposure to ultraviolet rays. The distance between the device and the surface of the skin should be at least 15 — 20 cm, the duration of the exposure should not be more than 2 minutes. Prolonged UV exposure can lead to the development of hyperpigmentation and burns. The obtained result is compared with the data of a special table. Light blue glow indicates normal healthy skin, intense blue color indicates increased dryness of the skin. Violet color is a sign of sensitive skin.

It is possible to recognize inflamed areas of tissue by the white color of the glow, however, if it is barely distinguishable, then there is a high probability of ordinary contamination. Brown light occurs in the presence of pigment, which is used in the diagnosis of depigmentation and hypopigmentation, and green or yellow-green light — in the case of fungal skin lesions. Variegated lichen gives a dull yellow glow, erythrasma - pink or red, favus - light silver. It is possible to influence not only the skin, but also the mucous membranes and urine collected in a transparentемкость.
