Ammonium is adsorbed by soil colloids, and the NO-3 anion forms salts with calcium, magnesium and other ions in the soil. The nitrate form of nitrogen forms easily soluble salts that can leach into the deeper layers of the soil.

With calcium deficiency in the soil, ammonium nitrate acidifies the soil solution. Local acidification is temporary. With the absorption of nitrate nitrogen by the plant, it disappears.
