Reservoir stocking is the process of stocking a reservoir with fish for various purposes: amateur fishing, commercial fish farming, ecological restoration of the ecosystem, or decorative purposes (for example, a pond in a homestead).
Main stages:
1. Assessment of the reservoir
Area, depth, flow rate (standing or flowing water);
Water quality (oxygen, temperature, pH, turbidity);
Availability of a natural feed base (plankton, benthos, aquatic vegetation);
Presence of predators or competitors (
fish already living there).
2. Selection of fish species
Depends on the goal:
Commercial fisheries: carp, grass carp, carp (white/spotted), crucian carp;
Sports fishing: pike, zander, catfish, trout (in cold water bodies);
Remedial stocking: white carp (eats vegetation), carp (cleans from plankton/algae);
Ponds/decorative ponds: koi carp, goldfish, sloth.
3. Calculation of planting density

Depends on:
Areas of reservoirs;
Fodder base;
Planned level of feeding (natural vs artificial feed);
Age/size of fry (larva, fry, yearling, yearling).
Approximate for a pond farm without additional feeding is about 500-1000 specimens of fry per hectare, but this varies greatly.
4. Terms and conditions of release
The best time is spring (after the water has warmed up) or autumn.
The water temperature at the outlet should be close to the temperature in the transport
container (to avoid stress/shock to the fish)
Acclimatization — gradual equalization of temperature before release
5. Sources of planting material
Fish farms/fish nurseries
Licensed providers (important for disease control)
