ORIGINATOR: Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Myroniv Wheat Institute named after V. M. Remesla NAAS.

ENTERED INTO THE REGISTER OF PLANT VARIETIES OF UKRAINE for 2006 for growing in the steppe, forest-steppe and steppe zones of Ukraine.

BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS: medium-stem variety, intensive type, medium-ripening. Resistant to laying down. Frost resistance is high. Drought resistant. Moderately resistant to powdery mildew and brown leaf rust. Resistant to grain shedding.

GRAIN QUALITY: flour milling and baking properties are good and excellent.Bohdana grain contains 12.9–14.7% protein, 26.6–32.3% raw gluten, flour strength 242–365 a.a., volume of bread from 100 g of flour 830–1110 ml, overall assessment of baking properties 4.2–5.0 points. Belongs to strong wheats.

ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: the variety is maximally adapted to arid growing conditions, high-yielding, intensive type. According to the originator (IFRG of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), during the years of competitive testing (2003-2005), the average yield of Bohdana was 79.5 t/ha, which was 13.8 t/ha higher than the yield of the national standard.

The grain yield in the state variety study of 2004 in 42 variety trials was 53.9 - 95.5 t/ha.

Substantial increases in the yield of the Bohdana variety to national standards – 5.0–51.3 t/ha – were obtained in 40 variety trials, including 10.7–51.3 t/ha – in 34 variety trials in 19 regions of Ukraine, covering the steppe, forest-steppe and Polissia zones (Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Donetsk, Chernivtsi, Cherkasy, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Ternopil, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, Zhytomyr, Volyn, Rivne).

The grain yield in the state variety study of 2005 in 22 variety trials was 50.2–98.2 t/ha.(//tractor-service.com)

Substantial increases in the yield of the Bohdana variety to national standards - 4.9–15.2 t/ha - were obtained in 10 variety studies, 7 regions of Ukraine, covering the steppe, forest-steppe and Polissia zones (Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Chernivtsi, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Rivne).

The maximum yield of the variety - 95.5 t/ha - was obtained at the Vinnytsia State Center for the Examination of Plant Varieties (2004), which exceeded the standard yield by 51.3 t/ha, and 98.2 t/ha - at the Myrhorod State Variety Testing Station of the Poltava Region (2005), which was 10.7 t/ha above the standard yield. In recent years (2007–2010), the yield of the variety in the experimental farm of the Institute was 84.8–102.0 t/ha.

AGROTECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: the variety must be grown using intensive technology with the introduction of optimal doses of mineral fertilizers. On high backgrounds of mineral nutrition, to prevent lodging, it is necessary to apply retardants. To ensure high grain yields, it is also necessary to protect plants from pests and diseases, especially after throwing out the ear, with fungicides such as alto super, falcon or folikur.

In order to obtain high-quality grain, it is necessary to carry out the third top dressing with dry nitrogen fertilizers or foliar top dressing with urea N10-15 kg per ha in the stage of earing - milky maturity.

The seed sowing rate is 4.5–5.5 million similar grains per 1 ha, depending on the zone and moisture supply.
