Holstein cow breed.
Origin
Although the Holstein and Semental breeds of cows were bred on the territory of North America, their ancestors were representatives of the black and mottled cattle, which were bred on the territory of some countries of Western Europe - Holland, Germany, and Belgium. For the first time black and whitecows were brought to the territory of the USA in the middle of the 19th century. A certain Winsrop Chenery, who bought the first herd of these cows, noticed their high milk productivity and decided to improve this quality. Thanks to the fruitful work of the Holstein-Friesian Cattle Breeding Association created in 1871 and the creation of a stud book, cows of this breed began to be bred in 12 states of the country in the following year. In 1983, its name was changed in Canada and the USA, and only the first part remained - Holstein. Although some sources still mention the old name.

Description
The Holstein-Friesian breed of cows differs from others not only in high milk yield, but also in purely external features. As a rule, its representatives have a black and mottled color - the ratio of white and black color on the skin of each animal is strictly individual. Sometimes they can be born completelyblack calves with small white spots on the legs and tail. In the process of selective selection, the appearance of offspring with a red-motley coat is also possible. This is explained by the effect of a recessive gene. Previously, such calves of the Holstein-Friesian breed were culled and, accordingly, were not allowed to reproduce further. Since 1971, such specimens have been selected to form an independent breed.

Despite the dairy orientation of the Holstein-Friesian breed, Holstein cattle reach a significant weight: adultheifers weigh about 600-700 kg, the average weight of Holstein-Friesian bulls is 900 kg. With enhanced and balanced nutrition, it is possible to achieve an increase in the weight of cows up to 800-900 kg, and bulls up to 1200 kg.

The height at the withers is 145-150 cm, in bulls this indicator is naturally higher - about 160 cm. The weight of newborn heifers ranges from 38 to 42 kg, Holstein bulls have an average weight of 45 kg. The breed is characterized by a deep chest - 83-86 cm, the width of the chest is on average 64 cm, the width of the pelvis - about 62 cm.

Cows have an exterior corresponding to the dairy type:

wedge-shaped and deep body;
long, broad shoulders;
rather wide waist;
udder is large, but tight, with clearly marked veins.

Performance characteristics
Cows of the Holstein-Friesian breed are characterized by the highest milk yield among other dairy breeds. Specific indicators of yield and fat content of milk depend on the climate of one or another locality and fodder base. So, for example, in Israel they managed to achieve such a balance of all necessary conditions of detention that they receive about 10,000 people annually. kg of milk The fat content of such a product usually does not exceed 3-3.1%, and the amount of protein is at the level of 3%. In the countries of North America, the Holstein dairy cow breed is distinguished by a slightly lower milk yield - about 8-9 thousand. kg of milk annually, but the percentage content of fat and protein in it is higher - 3.6 and 3.2, respectively. At Russian breeding farms, the yield reaches 7.5 thousand. kg with a milk fat content of 3.8%. Holstein cows with a red and variegated color give fatter milk, often reaching the mark of 3.95%, however, the amount of milk lags significantly behind the black and variegated color - within 4 thousand. kg.

Cows of the Holstein breed can also be characterized as record holders in terms of milk yield. In 1983, one of the cows managed to get a little more than 25 thousand. kg of milk for 305 days of lactation. Naturally, with such a quantity of milk, its fat content was somewhat lower than usual - about 2.8%.

Despite such high milk yield, one should not be fooled - in order to achieve good results, it is necessary to ensure not only a sufficient amount of feed, but also its balance. In winter, fodder consisting of grain corn, hay made from legumes, and fat-containing meal is necessary. The summer diet should consist of a large number of juicy green fodder.
