Cultivated in China due to its fast growth, high-quality wood, beautiful flowers, and large leaves. It has been known for more than 3000 years. Paulownia became known in Europe only in the middle of the nineteenth century, after Philipp Franz von Siebold, a naturalist, doctor and Japanese explorer, brought it to Europe. It enjoyed a fast-growing value as an ornamental plant.
Philip Franz von Siebold, who was in the service of the government of the Netherlands, named the tree in honor of the crown princess and later queen Anna Pavlovna of Holland, the daughter of Russian Tsar Paul I.
The inhabitants of the Alps know Pavlonia especially as the tree of the Austro-Hungarian emperor. It was a favorite tree of Emperor Franz Joseph, who allowed it to grow as an ornamental tree in large quantities in the parks of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
In Japan, Paulonia is known as Kiry. According to legend, Ho-oh, a
bird similar to a phoenix, known for the eternal rebirth of the soul, is only reborn on the Kira tree. In the hope of attracting good birds, trees are planted in yards and gardens. It is a symbol of luck and fertility. After the birth of the child, they plant a Kyra tree. When the child grew up and had his own children, the tree was cut down and a cradle was made from its wood.
