Juglans nigra - Black walnut
Amer. Black Walnut
The tree is 30 to 50 meters tall with a dark, almost black bark covered with deep cracks. The leaves are 25—50 cm long, alternate, odd-pinnate, with 11—23 oblong-ovate light green leaflets. The leaves are 6-10 cm long, up to 3 cm wide, gradually tapering to the top, the base is rounded, slightly unequal, the edge is irregularly finely toothed.
The nut is round, ovoid or obovate, pointed at the top, 3-4 cm in diameter, dark brown with 2 serrated and wavy ribs and sharp grooves between them, 4-lobed at the base, and 2-lobed at the top, with a thick shell having 4 lacunae. Grows quickly. It is demanding to the richness, humidity and good aeration of the soil. Fairly winter-hardy.
Walnut fruit - a false drupe covered with a thick, fleshy, green skin (pericarp or pericarp), which cracks when ripening and the nut falls out. The nut is represented by a bony endocarp and a kernel with a seed embryo enclosed in it.
Endocarp, 3-5 cm in diameter, dark brown or black with numerous sharp grooves. The shell is thick and durable. The yield of the kernel is 11-28 (up to 34%) of the weight of the nut. There is a great variety of fruits in terms of shape, size, shell strength, core bite.
Area of distribution: North America — from the state of Massachusetts south to Florida and Texas, mainly in the mountains in broad-leaved forests on fertile and sufficiently moist soils.
High yield is irregular: twice every 5 years. Black walnut seedlings are shade intolerant and rarely grow under a dense canopy. Black walnut loses its leaves a little earlier than other trees and has a growing season of 115 to 135 days.
The range of climatic zones: 4-9.
