St. John's wort belongs to the honey-bearing plants of the legume family. An adult plant reaches a height of 90-150 cm and emits a coumarin smell. The stem is straight, branched at the base. This culture is drought resistant. It grows on almost any soil, with the exception of wet lands. Its flowering period is very long, 40-50 days from mid-June to mid-August, and sometimes longer, until late autumn. The white bottom flower blooms 7-10 days later than the yellow one. It is a real find for beekeeping households.
Nectar productivity is 200-250 kg per hectare, and in fertile southern regions up to 300-400 kg. And under the best conditions, it is possible to collect up to 500 kg of honey. This honey bee, unlike others, can release nectar in any weather, regardless of humidity, and bees can collect almost all day. But most of all, the white groundhog releases nectar during the hottest time of the day. Its nectar is transparent, with a sugar content of up to 45 percent.
Seeds with excellent germination (up to 90%) should be sown in early spring. They are very fond of moisture and do not get excellent germination in dry soil. It is possible to sow it in late autumn, before the very frosts, so that it does not have time to germinate before severe frosts. The sowing rate is about 15-20 kg per hectare with dense sowing and about 8 kg with wide-row sowing. Seeds must be stored in a dry and dark place, germination lasts up to 14 years.
The seed coat is strong, so before sowing it is necessary to damage this coat - scratch it. At home, this is done with the help of sandpaper, and with large volumes of seeds, they need to be rolled in a special drum or even a concrete mixer with an abrasive material glued to the edges - a sandpaper. It is also possible tosoak the seeds in water for 3-4 hours. Then they will sprout more easily and give early shoots. Two weeks before planting, they should be placed in a warm place. They are buried in the ground not too deep, but at the same time it is necessary to take into account that the soil does not dry out. It does not require watering and can be planted in manycereals crops - millet, rye, wheat. It goes well only with oats and barley, they will simply drown it out.
This plant is biennial, therefore, for its optimal development, it must be mowed in the fall, leaving 20 cm of stubble above the soil. If these conditions are met in the second year of growth, it will grow and bloom much earlier and the bees can work on it much longer.
