The Tsygay breed is one of the oldest breeds in the world. According to Academician M. F. Ivanov, Gygai sheep are descended from fine-haired sheep that were bred on Phrygian pastures in Asia Minor, and they were known as early as 800 years before our era. Tsygai sheep are widespread in many countries of the Balkan Peninsula.
A characteristic feature of Tsygai sheep is the strength of constitution, endurance and undemanding to feed. Thanks to these qualities, they are successfully bred in the most diverse areas in terms of natural conditions. The main massifs of Tsygai sheep according to the breed zoning plan are located in the Crimean, Saratov, and Rostov regions, the Moldavian SSR, and the Kazakh SSR.
Modern Gypsy sheep, bred in different areas of the country, differ in some diversity. This is due, first of all, to the direction of selection, when in some cases they strive to develop more wool production in these sheep, in others milk production, and in others - all three types of productivity: wool, meat and milk.

Sheep of the Tsygay breed have a strong constitution, a strong skeleton. The head is dry, of medium size, the rams are horned and lumpy, the uteri are mostly hornless. Animals of the meat-wool (Priaz) type are characterized by higher productivity. Rams weigh 100-110 kg, ewes - 55-60 kg. The shearing of
wool is 7.5—8.5 and 4.0—4.5 kg, respectively, with a yield of 56—60%.
